About the Program
The then called Miss Temple City Pageant made it’s debut in 1966. It was organized and run by a small group of volunteers from the Temple City Chamber of Commerce. It was at this time and for many years after this that it served only as a beauty pageant and provided The City with one beauty queen to make appearances. Contestants competed in the traditional beauty pageant segments such as: formal wear, bathing suit, and talent competitions. As ideals in the community began to change the Pageant began to shift as well.
Although it is unclear when exactly this shift began in the program’s history, the focus of Miss Temple City changed from choosing a beauty queen to a court of ambassadors. During this time, the bathing suit competition was dropped and Directors began asking the contestants to give speeches on stage instead. Judging changed from how a contestant looked in the style of dress they chose to their confidence and ability to share their thoughts with others. Still being organized by Chamber of Commerce volunteers, the pageant began to take on a more business-like approach.
The current directors for the Miss Temple City Ambassador Program and Pageant have made several changes to the program to parallel changes in society. For instance, they re-branded the Program from the Miss Temple City Pageant to the Miss Temple City Ambassador Program and Pageant to distance ourselves from the idea of just a beauty pageant to a bigger ambassador program. Over time the program has become largely a service organization, doing anything from assisting at fundraisers for other organizations to providing face painting free of charge at City events. They have also updated our logo to a more modern design and changed the court from 3 members to 5. Perhaps the biggest change made thus far is separating from the Temple City Chamber of Commerce and becoming our own nonprofit organization.
The Program has also adopted a moto: Believe in you. Be the change. Dare to dream. This moto reflects the 3 things the directors hope all contestants get from the program. It is the hope that each contestant walks away believing in themselves and with more self-confidence than they started with, especially in a world where self confidence in young ladies is so hard to come by. They also want each girl to realize that they have the power to be the change they wish to see in the world. The directors firmly believe in teaching today’s youth to reach out and serve others to make a difference. Finally, they would like every contestant to dare to dream. It is important that they know that no dream is too big and no dream is too small.
The directors' greatest hope is that they can continue to make a difference in the lives of young ladies in our community.
